- (en) Inspired by Raphaël Baroni’s reflections on narrative tension, this contribution explores how the three main dynamics of narrative – suspense, curiosity and surprise – are transformed in re-reading. Suspense is modified into a new kind of narrative tension: the re-reader, all the while wishing for an outcome other than the one already known from a first reading, must nevertheless be resigned to what will inevitably befall the characters. Re-reading transforms surprise into a kind of anticipation that produces an impression analogous to modified suspense, amplifying the tragic or comic force of the events narrated. Curiosity disappears completely upon a second reading; the attention of the reader is instead drawn to previously unnoticed details in the narration, thus heightening awareness of the irony regarding the ultimate fate of certain characters. These phenomena are illustrated by short analyses of three episodes of 1 Samuel: 9,1-18 (surprise), 16,1-13 (curiosity), and 21–22 (suspense).
