Abstract
Hepatic biopsy remains indispensable in the framework of diagnosis and treatment of chronic hepatic disease in adults. It is, nevertheless, associated with a risk of morbidity and mortality that obliges the clinician to define this role with intelligence and in direct collaboration with the pathologist. In this article, the added value of the histological analysis of the liver will be discussed in the framework of different chronic hepatic pathologies. The main use of the histological analysis is its contribution to elucidating the stage of the disease and its prognostic without forgetting the possibility of revealing a second pathology potentially unknown to the clinician. The present article focuses on the role of hepatic biopsy in the presence of chronic hepatic disease in the adult, non-transplanted patient. The role of hepatic biopsy in the context of a hepatic tumour will not be discussed.
