- The starting point for this article is located in the idea that the fundamental message of Mark is about the creation of a new portrayal of God through the words and deeds of Jesus. In this sense, the characterization of “God” in Mark’s Gospel is surprising. From the beginning, at the level of discourse, readers are surprised that God entrusts the human person Jesus with the responsibility of the Reign of God (1,1 and 1,14- 15). But then, the same readers are surprised that, at the story level, no other characters in the gospel are able to accept this new image of God revealed by Jesus: the opponents accuse Jesus of blasphemy, the disciples do not understand him and leave him, and – most surprisingly – as his death comes near, Jesus himself doubts the presence of God (15,34). The cumulative effect of these reactions stimulates readers to a deeper reflection on what is meant by the concept of following Jesus and as a result, the reader may learn that God will always remain a mystery.
