- (en) A ritual, as a discourse, is a strategic tool a religion uses to build a hegemonic order. This can be understood as the normative performance that models the way a religion is going to function. Thus, ritualization produces relationships of power within the religious community, especially between sexes. From that perspective, this paper will analyse a Jewish immersion ritual, the miqvah, and draws a comparison between the traditional practice and its feminists’ transformations. Initially, the miqvah is a rite of purification framing the life of the Jewish, menstruated and married women, which grants them a certain status within the community. Rabbi Elyse Goldstein has worked on the traditional practice to adapt it to the changing mentalities and thus detach it from its regulatory role in the marital sexual relations.
