Abstract
(en) In a context of migration, women often struggle with complexe everyday life situations. In order to face changes, they mobilize the diverse constituents of their identity and elaborate strategies, which they meet in the places which insert them socially and culturally. The purpose of this PhD research is to understand the process of identitary construction of women of Moroccan origin in between maternity and social commitment. Practices, their signification and issues, in connection with these two identitary domains, are questioned through the biographical approach. The research took place in an urban women’s organization, mainly dedicated to popular education. Life stories were conducted and analysed through the hermeneutical approach, as a result of an original theoretical frame inspired by Daniel Bertaux and Danielle Desmarais and of rigorous methodological choices. We were able to highlight five figures of identitary construction and bring to the forefront some interpretative tracks of the analysis of the life stories. Four strong interpretations emerge from the analysis. The first one raises the importance of the recognition by others in the construction of oneself. The second brings to light the process of cultural interbreeding which engages the women in a citizenship which lives, among others aspects by the education to their children and the transmission to them of traditional and crossed values. The third conclusion suggests that the intensification of the narrative identity reinforces the identical dynamics of self knowledge and emancipation. The fourth shows the importance of the women’s organization as an “identitary (re-) source” which generates self reinforcement and self assertion of the women who were able to narrate their story.
