In order to successfully navigate in the social environment, we need to be able to understand and predict other people’s behavior so that we can respond appropriately. One way by which we make sense of other people’s behavior is by inferring their mental states (such as what they see, want, know or think), an ability usually referred to as having and using a Theory of Mind. This chapter will first summarize the classic findings and debates that have shaped our views of Theory of Mind over the past three decades. The chapter will then present a series of recent controversial findings that provide new avenues for the study of how we read other people’s minds.
