- (en) This research aims to reconstruct the issues of a philosophy of history in Walter Benjamin’s writings. It shows that, according to Benjamin, philosophy of history and philosophy of art meet in a similar conception of the critical activity. In Benjamin’s oeuvre, critique has to be seen as a practical method of transformation of both the subject and the object in a material history. Our thesis constructs three levels of critique that we analyzed in Benjamin’s work. A first level concerns the content that is criticized. It is regressive and deconstructive but does not manage to propose a solution to the state of oppression in which the subject is embedded. From this, a second level of critique is constructed, based on form – rather than content – and which aims at correcting the content of the above-mentioned oppression. Finally, we develop a critique of critique that is neither denunciation, nor partial correction of an oppressive system but the emancipation of the subject. This form of critique concerns the transformation of the subject in regard to his activity – intellectual or artistic intervention. This third level doesn’t only criticize a state of facts but also tries to develop learning resources in the subject, so as to allow him to overcome oppression and construct a new way of living together.
