Abstract
Nanotechnologies are revolutionizing the way we communicate, consume, and think. With modern means of communication, everything seems to be fast, clean, reconfigurable, etc., but behind our screens there is an industry which requires more space, energy and matter than ever before. Given that tens of billion of electronic objects are scattered around homes, buildings, cars, etc., there is an urgent need to review economic, technological and societal models in order to develop a sustainable electronics industry that cares about its impact at the early stage of the product design. Engineers and scientists must embrace the complexity of these societal challenges by adopting a holistic approach. This paradigm shift must be taught to future engineers so that they contribute to the development of a sustainable and fairer world.
