(en) There are several hieroglyphic signs, terms, and expressions in the ancient Egyptian language which convey submission. This is evident in religious texts, literary sources, accompanying texts of wall scenes and stelae. Yet, expressing submission is found also in the ancient Egyptian iconography. This paper describes the diverse ways of expressing submission in ancient Egypt from the Old Kingdom till the New Kingdom through a linguistic and iconographical approach, focusingon the act of prostration as a prominent posture of submission.
