Abstract
(en) The field of environmental justice, which is the focus of this topical issue of Belgeo, has its roots in the long history of both social and scholarly movements and struggles around the world. This article, based on discussions within JUSTES, the contact group on ecological and social justice of the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS), aims to sustain this historical link between the scientific and political spaces of environmental justice. As such, it complements the studies in this topical issue with a historical and political perspective on these issues. It first proposes a definitional framework and takes stock of the social history of both social justice and environmental/ecological justice. It then describes and analyzes the main principles and political claims arising from historical demands voiced by social-environmental movements, and found in texts, declarations, and political conventions, as well as in the most influential scientific work in the field. It concludes by presenting seven lessons from the field of social and environmental/ecological justice which, together, outline the political conditions for just environmental transformations. In doing so, it contributes to inform, understand, and support the many initiatives for social and environmental justice in Belgium, whether in the media, politics, or social movements.
