- Abstract
- The occurrence of morbid complications in several organ systems after long-term insulin therapy for diabetes has stimulated renewed interest in pancreas and islet transplantation. Representing the state of the art in this difficult procedure, this monograph compiles the experimental and clinical approach of a single center. Opening chapters outline the clinical aspects of type I diabetes through the history of pancreas transplantation and review the major experimental studies with emphasis on the author’s own work. Recipient and donor selection criteria, all the most currently used techniques of pancreas donor or recipient operation, and patient management and monitoring are then explained and illustrated. Transplantation results are compared to those reported to the International Pancreas Transplant Registry. Current controversies concerning pancreas transplantation with the duct management technique, whole versus segmental grafts, graft preservation, immunosuppression, and patient selection are also discussed. <BR> Thoroughly referenced and containing a wealth of clear illustrations and helpful tables, this comprehensive presentation will be important reading for transplant surgeons, diabetologists, surgeons and nephrologists
