- We identify four types of assemblage—the God’s-Eye View, the Proto-Panopticon, the Panopticon, and the Synopticon—as particular configurations of the objective gaze and subjective gaze that can produce characteristic social spaces of organizational surveillance through the operation of circuits of power. A change in a circuit of power is a moment of rupture where the deterritorialization of one social space of surveillance and a reterritorialization of another occurs. We identify a historical moment of rupture when the God’s-Eye View gave way to the Proto-Panopticon, where an organizational order based on theocracy gave way to an enduring organizational order based on bureaucracy. We then examine how this latter order has been challenged in quick succession by the emergence of the Panopticon and, even more recently, the Synopticon. This suggests the advent of new organizational orders that we call ‘autocracy’ and ‘agoracracy’ respectively.
