This chapter undertakes a survey studying the orienting gaze and the various mechanisms that secure gaze orientation. Animal species can be divided into two broad oculomotor categories depending on whether or not they have a fovea. Afoveate animals are not very concerned with the exact position of images on their retina, which is almost uniform in terms of visual performance, although it is nevertheless very critical for them to maintain the whole visual image as stable as possible on their retina. Their eye movements almost exclusively serve the purpose of stabilizing. However, as afoveate animals' visual field is necessarily restricted to a fraction of the visual environment, their gaze needs to be oriented, which is performed by a rapid head rotation always accompanied by a fast eye movement. Animals with foveas have retained these systems, but have added others, designed to bring selected images onto the fovea and then hold them there: pursuit, vergence, and foveate saccadic systems. On the basis of these considerations, it is possible to separate oculomotor systems into those that relocate the image on the retina (orienting systems) and those designed to hold the images relatively still on the retina for better viewing.
