- In the present paper, by way of textual examples taken from 14th-century travel narrative (John of Mandeville) and romance (Roman de Perceforest, Atile en Ytarie), I will explore how late-medieval French literature negotiated the representation of conquered and conqueror identities through the hybrid. By doing so, I wish to demonstrate that these texts staged, through the exploded animal-human body, the fantasy of cultural hybridisation. This fantasy is not only a new development from earlier texts, that used irregular bodies mostly to demonstrate the impossibility of integrating the Other; it is also in contrast with the crystallisation of national identities underway in proto-modern discourse.
