Abstract
This talk provides a brief introduction to vortex methods and specifically, their state-of-the-art variants which combine the particle discretization with a mesh, the so-called Vortex-in-Cell or Vortex Particle-Mesh methods. We will cover the very specific areas of development that enable the investigation of turbine-scale problems and actually allow a vortex method to jump from academia to wind industry-relevant problems. Among others, we will focus on the coupling of a so-called lifting line approach with a 3D vortex method. This technique treats bound and shed vorticities in a fashion reminiscent of vortex lattice methods. We discuss its advantages over the actuator line technique of velocity-pressure formulations and demonstrate its potential in the studies of rotor-scale aerodynamics and wake phenomena in wind energy.
