- This volume examines the history of crime and justice between 1650 and 1800, taking the West in the Age of Enlightenment as its starting point. In particular, it takes stock of two innovative fields of historical research in the past half-century—generally, the efforts to understand how crime is perceived in societies and, more specifically, the major evolutions in the perception and treatment of crime in this “long eighteenth century,” a period characterized by the increasing movement of people, goods, ideas, and technologies on a global scale (Dwyer and Damousi 2020; Knepper and Johansen 2016).
