- The Pictorial Glossary on the Aesthetics of Resistance gathers short essays on the multiple media and artistic strategies that are employed in calling for change in political and legal systems. My contribution to the glossary compares the "defacing" of a monument of the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and other prominent political and artistic figures with other acts of defilement of public monuments in contemporary political protest, as well as how these acts are communicated in official media. It highlights that such strategies are not only applied by private protesters in political conflict, but also by official authorities in order to erase the memory of former rulers. The glossary is an ongoing project of the "Nomos of Images" research project, based at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, Max-Planck-Institute.
